Thame Grammar School Headmasters

The following is a list of Thame Grammar School headmasters, reproduced from from "A Short History of Thame School" by J. Howard Brown, which covers the years from the start of the school in 1570 to 1920 and spans both buildings. Headmasters since 1920 have been supplied by the current Lord Williams School.

Edward Harris, born in 1534 at Thame and previously of New College, Oxford. Died in 1597 at Thame.

1597-1627
Richard Boucher, born in 1561 at Handborough, Oxfordshire and previously of Winchester and New College, Oxford. Died in 1627 at Thame.

1627-1631
Hugh Evans, born around 1600 at Harlech, North Wales and previously of Winchester and New College, Oxford. Died in 1631 at Thame.

1631-1647
William Burt, born in 1608 at Winchester and previously of Winchester and New College, Oxford. Went on to be Headmaster and Warden of Winchester College and Canon of Winchester. Related by marriage to Oliver Cromwell and John Hampden. Died in 1679 at Winchester.

1647-1655
Williams Ayliffe, previously of Winchester and New College, Oxford. Went on to be Vicar of Ambrosden, near Bicester. Died in 1664 at Ambrosden.

1655-1675
Hugh Willis, born around 1625 at Winchester, and previously of Winchester and New College, Oxford. Went on to be Vicar of Thame from 1663.

1675-1694
Thomas Middleton, born around 1644 at St Clements, London and previously of Winchester and New College, Oxford. Died in 1694 at Thame.

1684-1727
Henry Bruges, born around 1669 at Winchester and previously of Winchester and New College, Oxford. Died in 1727 at Thame.

June-July 1727
Williams Lamplugh, born around 1700 at Kensington and previously of New College, Oxford. Went on to be Rector of Alton Barnes.

1727-1729
James Fussell, born around 1699 at Winchester and previously of New College, Oxford. Went on to be Vicar of Hardwicke, Buckinghamshire.

April-June 1729
Robert Wheeler, previously of New College, Oxford.

1729-1768
John Kipling, born in 1695 at Tackley, Durham and previously of Christ Church. Went on to be Curate of Chearsley, Buckinghamshire. Died in 1769 at Chearsley.

1768-1773
John Hook, born around 1739 at Gloucester and previously of New College, Oxford. Went on to be Headmaster of Bedford School. Died in 1810 at Bedford.

1773-1783
William Cooke, born around 1746 at Enford, Wiltshire and previously of New College, Oxford. Went on to be Vicar of Worminghall, Buckinghamshire and a minor poet. Died in 1795 at Worminghall.

1783-1814
William Stratford, born around 1747 at Oxford and previously of Christ Church College, Oxford. Went on to be Headmaster of Bedford School. Died in 1814.

1814-1841
Timothy T Lee, born in 1770 at Thame and previously of Winchester and Pembroke College, Oxford. Formerly Vicar of Thame from 1795. Died in 1841 at Thame.

1841-1872
T B Fookes, born in 1809 at Dartford, Kent and previously of New College, Oxford. Died in 1874 at Hampstead.

George Plummer, born in 1846 at Penzance and previously of Brasenose College, Oxford and Headmaster of Hawarden Grammar School. Died in 1891 at Thame.

Benjamin Sharp, born in 1852 at Warrington and previously of Worcester College. Went on to be House Master of Reading School.

Alfred E Shaw, born in 1860 and died in 1921 at Tunbridge Wells.
